Program Description
Graduate Programs
Graduate programs in the Department of Agricultural Education, Communications, amd 4-H Youth Development are designed to
(1) prepare students for entry into, or advancement in, teaching or communications career, or
(2) provide for further development of professional leadership skills in other educational careers in agriculture, agribusiness, government service, extension, or adult education.
To meet needs of both international and domestic students, plans of study are developed for academic excellence specific to students career goals. The selection and organization of courses are made in consultation with the advisor and the student's advisory committee. |

Students may choose between two Master of Science degree programs: The Master of Science in Agricultural Education and the Master of Science in Agricultural Communications. Both programs develop the theoretical and research foundation for further graduate studies in addition to further knowledge and skills in agriculture and education or communications. They are designed primarily for those students interested in research. Two options are offered in the Master of Science programs. The thesis option requires 30 approved semester hours of course work, which includes a six-credit-hour formal thesis following the Graduate College format. The formal report option requires 32 approved semester hours of course work, which includes a two-credit-hour formal report.
The Doctor of Philosophy degree is desgined to prepare graduates for careers in teacher education, supervision, administration, curriculum development and other areas of professional leadership in agriculture, agricultural extension or education. Within the 60 semester minimum credit hour requirement, 15 hours must be completed in Agricultural Education. In addition a minimum of 15 semester hours must be completed in an area of specialization such as agricultural extension, technical agriculture, or educational administration. The additional hours include 15 hours of research design and statistics and 15 hours for the dissertation.
Admission Requirements
Full admission to the master's degree programs requires a bachelor's degree in agricultural education, agriculture, education, or related area and a minimum grade point average of 2.8 or 3.0 in the last 30 hours. Three letters of reference and a statement of purpose are also required. Acceptable Graduate Record Examination scores (school code 6546, department code 3908) are required for full admission to either of the Master of Science degree programs.
Full admission to the doctoral degree program requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 in 24 or more graduate hours, acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Examination, three years of successful professional experience, and three strong letters of recommendation. A statement of purpose is also required. Alternative criteria may be considered by the Graduate Commitee for those who submit ample supportive evidence of other exemplary qualifications.

Graduate Faculty List
The Department of History awards teaching assistantships for students who assist faculty in classes. The application form for assistantships is included in the departmental admissions packet. Annual awards are made by the department to underwrite graduate student research and travel to professional meetings.
