Program Description
This program is designed for practicing emergency services professionals or those aspiring to serve in that capacity. The curriculum builds solid foundations in administration and practice for those who will manage the operations of fire and emergency management organizations. Through studies of organizations, budgeting, the policy process, labor management, and special fire and emergency management topics, the program prepares, and then requires, participants to demonstrate core competencies in directing an emergency service agency. Traditional public management concepts are applied with an emphasis on managing fire and emergency management organizations and the unique functions inherent in these disciplines.
Admission Requirements
Admission requires that applicants meet one of the following eligibility requirements in addition to satisfying all other portions of the application process:
- The student must posses significant practical work experience in a fire or emergency management related field or
- Hold an undergraduate degree in fire or emergency management or
- Complete undergraduate coursework in the fire or emergency management fields as prescribed by the program director and based on previous experience levels.
In addition, all applicants must posses a bachelor's degree, complete the application for admission, submit letters of reference, and have official transcripts on file. No graduate entrance exam is required at this time. Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or students must show a history that suggests the ability to perform at the graduate education level.
Financial Aid
Students are asked to write Financial Aid, 119 Student Union, to request an FAFSA packet. This form must be completed by all students seeking loans, grants, and fee waivers, a variety of which are available. Additionally, graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Contact the Fire and Emergency Management Program to apply for an assistantship.
