Program Description
The Master of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Science is a unique program designed to address the needs of the student who desires a strong interdisciplinary perspective and who has personal and professional goals which are not addressed in traditional degree programs.
The program has two options that can be chosen: Aviation and Space Sciences, and Health Care Administration
For those not choosing one of the two options, the degree program consists of no fewer than three separate fields or areas of study with at least 6 hours in each field or area. No more than 15 hours may be taken in any one area. The advisory committee will assist the student in formulating the plan of study.
The Interdisciplinary Science master's (with no option) can be obtained in three ways:
1. a 30-hour plan, including a six-hour research thesis;
2. a 34-hour plan, including a two-credit hour formal report; or
3. a 36-hour plan with a well-defined, creative and scholarly component.
Option in Aviation and Space Sciences
Courses, totaling a minimum of 33 credit hours, are selected from the core areas of aviation education, research, organizational theory, and administration and/or management. Ancillary courses are selected from a variety of disciplines to enhance the professional goals and objectives of the individual student. Suggested areas include economics, political science, speech communication, and sociology.
For more information about the Aviation and Space Sciences option, please see their website.
Option in Health Care Administration
This interdisciplinary degree offers on-site courses at OSU-Stillwater and OSU-Tulsa as well as distance learning opportunities. While it is currently not possible to graduate through distance learning alone, we know that our students have truly benefited from the shared curriculum with the OSU MBA program and the Public Administration option in the Master’s of Political Science as well as other programs within the Graduate College.
For more information about the Health Care Administration option, please see their website.
Admission Requirements
All students applying to the Interdisciplinary Science program must submit the following material to the program coordinator of the specific option:
a. An official Graduate College application for admission;
b. A $40 (or domestic students) or $75 (for international student applicants) nonrefundable fee
c. Original transcripts for all college level courses;
d. A written statement of personal goals and professional objectives to be obtained from the program;
e. Three letters of recommendation.
Applicants should indicate on the application which option they are interested in. Additional criteria to the those stated above may be required of the option in Aviation and Space Science and the option in Health Care Administration.
Applications to the Interdisciplinary Science (with no option) should submit:
1. a cover letter indicating the personal goals and professional objectives to be obtained from the program and clear rationale why existing OSU graduate programs fail to meet these needs;
2. transcripts from all schools previously attended;
3. three letters of recommendation from persons who can describe abilities, interest, and motivation as a student;
4. a proposed course of study with an endorsement from an OSU faculty advisor.
Additional admission requirements (such as test scores, statements of purpose) associated with the department of the OSU faculty advisor may also be required. Admission into the program will require the timely submission of all necessary admission materials.
In developing a proposed course of study, particular courses are not specified for the degree. The course of study must include at least 21 credit hours at the graduate level (5000 or above). Up to nine graduate hours can be transferred from a regionally-accredited graduate program with consent of the advisory committee.
The student chooses any of the three master's degree plans:
1. a 30-hour plan, including a six-hour research thesis;
2. a 34-hour plan, including a two-credit hour formal report; or
3. a 36-hour plan with a well-defined, creative and scholarly component.
Applicants who will be entering the United States with a student visa must also submit a financial affidavit showing the amount currently required by OSU.
A TOEFL or IELTS score is a required part of the application for all persons for whom English is a second language. However, an applicant who has or will have completed a baccalaureate or graduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary teaching language, and which is located in a country where English is a primary language, is not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score.
If required, an official TOEFL score of 79 (internet based test) or 550 (paper based test) is required to be submitted. The TOEFL institution code for OSU is 6546.
Alternatively, an official IELTS, academic stream, examination with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 will satisfy the English proficiency requirements for admission to a graduate program. Either examination must have been taken within the last two years. Some departments require a score above the minimum 79/550 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS.
Financial Aid
Teaching and Research Assistantships
Assistantships may be possible to those applying to the Aviation and Space Science and the Health Care Administration options. Often administrative units such as the offices of the vice-presidents, deans, financial aid, minority programs and services, and residence halls hire graduate assistants. Interested applicants should inquire directly to those units for information.
